I’ve been taking photographs for as long as I can remember, but over the last five years, photography has become something much more serious. For as long as my friends and family have known me, I’ve also been their unofficial, and often very official—photographer. Somewhere along the way, that turned into photographing weddings, engagements, portraits, celebrations, and the people and moments that matter most.

Connection is at the center of how I photograph. I find that my best work comes from really knowing the person in front of my camera: what makes them laugh, who they love, how they move through the world. I’ve been told that I have a way of making people feel like they’re the only person in the room, and I think that feeling is a big part of what makes a photograph honest.

My approach is documentary and observational. I’m less interested in manufacturing a moment than I am in noticing the ones already happening. A glance across the room, a hand on a shoulder, an expression that lasts for half a second. I want to be present enough to catch those things without interrupting them.

That idea has always resonated with me. Photography grounds me in the present, and I love being a fly on the wall for some of the most important days in people’s lives. Whether it’s a wedding, an engagement, a portrait session, or a celebration, I’m interested in the people as much as the photographs and in creating images that feel like them, rather than simply images that look good.
